NYU Abu Dhabi & UAEU — six posts assessed

Every advertisement was opened and read on 1 August 2026 and checked against her actual record. Four are worth applying for and carry a complete package — cover letter, research statement and the right CV, all written for that specific post. Two are not, and the card says exactly why.

Two of these six were left without documents on purpose. The coral–microbe post is marine ecology with Gulf fieldwork, and the RNA-MIND post requires three years of post-doctoral experience in phase separation and RNA granule biology. Writing cover letters for those would mean inventing relevance that a specialist panel would see through in a minute — and each would cost two reference letters and a transcript request. If you want them written anyway, say so.

Postdoctoral Fellow — targeted delivery of epigenetic inhibitors

Closes 2026-08-31Requires CV with publication list · research statement · cover letter

**The closest subject match in the country.** The post is on targeted delivery systems for potent epigenetic inhibitors in cancer. JQ1 — one of the two drugs in her thesis — is that class of drug, and her whole doctorate was building a carrier to deliver it into a tumour.

They ask for a PhD in Chemistry and "extensive hands-on experience in multi-step organic synthesis" with route optimisation and NMR. She is a formulation scientist, not a synthetic chemist — she does not make the molecules, she delivers them. The letter opens with that rather than burying it, and argues the project needs both halves.

Next: Closes 31 August. Submit well before — portals fail on the last day.

Assistant Professor — Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Closes 2026-12-31Requires see the UAEU portal — CV, cover letter, teaching and research statements

The best-matched post in this batch, and the deadline is months away. Their preferred research areas open with "molecular mechanisms of diseases (e.g., cancer…)", which is precisely her doctorate. The stated required experience is "at least 2-3 years of experience in an academic or research institution" with a publication record in high-impact journals, plus hands-on molecular biology techniques and small animal handling — she has eight years at a CAS institute, publications in Journal of Controlled Release and Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B, the full molecular toolkit, and she ran her own murine studies including ethics approval and histopathology.

Two real gaps. Protein purification is named in the required experience and she has never done it. And they prefer five years of postdoctoral experience or two years as an Assistant Professor; she has about one year post-PhD. That second one is listed as preferred, not required — which is why this is worth applying for where the RAKMHSU and circadian posts were not. Her PhD is in Pharmaceutics rather than Biomedical Sciences, so the letter makes the "closely related discipline" argument explicitly rather than hoping nobody notices.

Next: Closes 31 December — the least urgent, and the most winnable. Do it properly.

Post-Doctoral Associate — Kamei Reverse Bioengineering Laboratory

Contact kk4801@nyu.edu (Dr Ken-ichiro Kamei)Requires cover letter · CV with full publication list · statement of research interests · transcript · 3 letters of reference

She meets the eligibility bar, which is the first thing that matters: a PhD "within the first five years", and hers was awarded in 2025. The lab builds nano- and micro-engineered platforms that interface with human stem cells and translates them into drug discovery and precision therapeutics. Their required list is an or list — "expertise in areas such as device design and fabrication, stem-cell culture and differentiation, high-resolution imaging, single-cell or bulk omics, or bioinformatics" — and she clears high-resolution imaging outright (confocal, fluorescence, immunofluorescence) alongside eight years of building nanomaterials that have to work in living cells.

No stem-cell work, no microfabrication, no omics or bioinformatics. Her cell culture is mammalian, primary and macrophage, not pluripotent stem cells, and she has never fabricated a device. Three of the five listed areas are genuinely absent. The letter names all three in the second paragraph.

Next: Needs three reference letters. Email Dr Kamei first — see the enquiry note in the folder.

Post-Doctoral Associate — Materials NMR Laboratory

Contact brijiththomas@nyu.edu (Dr Brijith Thomas)Requires cover letter · CV · transcript · research statement · at least 2 letters of recommendation

One real hook, and it is not trivial. The lab studies "structure–property relationships in molecular solids, porous materials, pharmaceuticals, organic materials" — and her doctoral carrier was a mesoporous polydopamine system whose entire behaviour was governed by pore structure and interfacial stabilisation. She is also inside the eligibility window ("less than 5 years post receiving their PhD"), and their requirement is at least one of five areas, one of which is "advanced structural characterisation of materials" — TEM, SEM, DLS and zeta potential are hers.

This is fundamentally a solid-state NMR laboratory and she has no NMR at all — no magic-angle spinning, no multinuclear or 2D methods, no NMR crystallography, and no computational chemistry or DFT. Her PhD is in Pharmaceutics, where they ask for Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Physics. Realistically this is a long shot: she would be competing against solid-state NMR spectroscopists for a solid-state NMR post. It is included because the pharmaceutical–porous-materials overlap is genuine and the application costs one evening.

Next: Apply only after the UAEU posts. Two reference letters required.

Associate Research Scientist — coral–microbe interactions

Contact kelly.bradham@nyu.edu (Kelly Bradham)Requires cover letter · CV · transcript · research statement · 2 references

None that survives contact with the advertisement.

This is a marine biology post. It asks for research on coral–microbe interactions and coral resilience to environmental stress, fieldwork throughout the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, and states that experience in coral reef ecosystems is highly desirable. It also requires "at least 3 years of relevant experience" post-PhD; she has one, and none of it is relevant here. She has no marine biology, no ecology, no fieldwork, no coral, and no multi-omics.

No cover letter has been written for this one. Producing one would mean inventing a connection between cancer nanomedicine and coral microbiomes that does not exist, and a panel of marine ecologists would see that immediately. It would also cost two reference letters and a transcript request.

Associate Research Scientist — RNA modifications & ischemic stroke

Contact ohtan.wang@nyu.edu (Dr Dan Ohtan Wang)Requires resume · cover letter · transcript · statement of past research · 2 references

Flow cytometry and fluorescence imaging, which she genuinely has. Nothing else.

The requirement is explicit and she misses it by the full margin: "a PhD degree … with at least 3 years of relevant experience in the phase separation, and RNA granule biology fields (not including the years obtaining the PhD)". She is one year post-PhD with no phase separation work, no RNA granule biology, no neuroscience and no molecular cloning. The desirable list — biophysics, liquid–liquid phase separation, RNA–protein interaction, RNA modification, Ribo-seq, neural dynamics imaging — is entirely absent from her record.

This is the same shape as the circadian neuroscience post: a senior appointment for someone who has spent their career in that specific subfield. No cover letter has been written.

Next: Do not apply. Two reference letters would be spent on a post that filters on year one.

Checklist

How to run this batch

Order of play

1. UAEU epigenetic-delivery postdoc — it has a real deadline (31 August) and it is the closest subject match she will find. Do this one first and do not leave it to the final week.

2. UAEU Assistant Professor, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology — the most winnable of the six. Cancer molecular mechanisms is their first named preferred area and it is precisely her doctorate. It closes 31 December, so there is time to do it properly rather than quickly.

3. Kamei Reverse Bioengineering — email Dr Kamei before assembling the full application, because it needs three reference letters. A short honest note asking whether a candidate without stem-cell or fabrication experience would be considered costs nothing and saves the referees a wasted ask.

4. Materials NMR — last, and only if there is appetite. The pharmaceutical and porous materials overlap is real, but she would be competing against solid-state NMR spectroscopists for a solid-state NMR post.

What every one of these needs that she does not yet have

A degree transcript. Five of the six ask for one. It has to come from the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica / University of Chinese Academy of Sciences registry, and Chinese institutions can take weeks. Request it now — one request covers every application.

Reference letters, uploaded by the referees themselves. Kamei wants three, Materials NMR wants two. The three drafts in 06_References are ready for Prof. Huang, the co-supervisor and Dr Deshpande to approve and print on letterhead.

Applying through Interfolio gives her a free Dossier account that stores each letter once and sends it to any number of positions. Set it up properly on the first application and no referee ever has to be asked twice — with four applications in this batch alone, that is the single highest-value administrative step available.

The honest pattern across all six

Five of the six advertisements were written for someone with three to five years of post-doctoral experience in a named subfield. She has one year, in a different subfield. That is not a flaw in her record — it is what one year post-PhD looks like — but it means the applications that work are the ones where the requirement is preferred rather than required, or where the subject overlap is strong enough to outweigh it.

The UAEU postdoc qualifies on subject overlap. The UAEU Assistant Professor post qualifies because the five-year expectation is explicitly a preference. Those two are where the effort belongs.
